Fish DiseasesUnfortunately fish can catch a number of harmful and fatal diseases. It is very important to monitor the health of your fish as these diseases can spread quickly through your tank to the other fish. Sometimes fish are purchased already suffering from a disease, poor water quality also affects the health of your fish. If you can afford it and find the space, it is a good thing to have an extra tank to quarantine and treat fish. Some people will flush diseased fish down the toilet! This form of fish euthanasia is extremely cruel. Diseased fish can be treated and cured and like all living creatures deserve a chance to get better if they can. Below are some common diseases: White Spot This is a common problem, usually brought into your aquarium with newly purchased fish. When buying fish check very carefully for white spot. It is identifiable as small white spots and diseased fish may gasp for air. Treat it immediately with a remedy. Fungal diseases This is a nasty yet common problem that will cause much distress for your fish if not treated quickly. The body of the affected fish will start to turn white and ragged, or form fluffy blobs. A wounded fish can develop this problem. Treat with an additive. Swim bladder problems Fish have an internal organ called a swim bladder. This keeps them the right way up when swimming. If a fish has a swim bladder defect it will tilt in the water, swim upside down or twirl as it swims. Treatments are available so talk to your aquatic dealer. Parasites Sometimes parasites that attack fish can find their way into the aquarium. Look for the scales becoming discoloured and slimy. Treatments are available from aquatic dealers. Ragged and shredded fins This may look like a nasty disease but is usually caused by fish attacking each other. This can be avoided by choosing your fish carefully. If fish are fighting or bullying other fish they should be separated, either into another tank or back to the dealer you bought them from (but don’t expect a refund).
