Keeping Coldwater FishThe most common type of coldwater fish available is the common goldfish. It is easy to care for and makes a great pet for children. You can also choose from many different types of ornamental goldfish such as blackmoors, fantails, shubunkins or comets. These are still directly related to the goldfish but look very different due to the way they have been bred over the centuries. The ornamental breeds are slightly more delicate compared to the common goldfish, but with a good water filter you should have no problem keeping them. Goldfish like to live in a community and are a great choice for a beginner. As well as the goldfish family there are many other types of coldwater fish that can be kept in an aquarium such as orfe, a fast moving carp like fish with a golden pinkish colour and a personal favourite of mine the weather loach. The loach looks more like an eel with long barbells around its mouth. As a general rule, coldwater fish grow quite large and will need lots of room. They also tend to try to jump out of their tanks, so you must keep a lid on your aquarium.
